Description

On Sunday afternoon of June 3rd, the Fuego volcano exploded unexpectedly in southern Guatemala, producing ash columns up to 10,000 meters above sea level, descent of constant pyroclastic flows, descent of strong lahars and clouds burning with temperatures up to 700 degrees Celsius that covered more than 260 kilometers around, affecting several communities near this volcanic dome.

The volcano is still active, so the work of the rescuers is proving very complicated.

The accounting of affected people after the Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis -EDAN-, until June 6, add up to 99 more deaths, about 1,700,000 affected and more than 3 million evacuees from the most damaged communities . The number of missing persons remains uncertain, so the number of victims can increase significantly. The departments of Sacatepéquez, Escuintla and Chimaltenango were declared in the State of Calamity.

Currently, two schools in the community of Alotenango in Antigua Guatemala, in which Fundación Telefónica intervenes, are being used as shelters.
